The brief was to alter this house to accommodate a family of five, with three teenage daughters. The original house was composed of a single storey kitchen, living & dining area and a split level, accommodating the garage and 2 floors of bedrooms and bathrooms. The client wanted a new main bedroom wing with a study and yogarium. Also discussed was to provide a generous volume to the living area and a stronger connection to the existing pool.

The materials of the house are organised into Vertical seam folded Zinc and grey stained Horizontal cedar weatherboards. This modulates the form of the house and defines the functions into; garage, main bedroom wing, entry void, upper & lower study, and media room/existing bedrooms.

In front of the yogarium, adjacent the main bedroom is a timber upper floor deck enclosed by a louvered roof. These roof elements are used outside the kitchen & to enclose the outdoor fireplace. The vertical stacked basalt cladding of the indoor & outdoor fireplace is also used as the material that seeps down the driveway & into the entry courtyard.

The other unifying material used to stitch this alteration together is the selected 1000 x 500 marble chip terrazzo pavers. This starts at the entry courtyard steps & moves through the house and surrounds the north exterior courtyard and pool. Additional carpet inset anchors the living room. This carpet runs up through the bedroom, study & media room.

The stained oak veneer panels to the lounge, kitchen bench up-stand & the interior doors also bring warmth to the house. The entry door to the house is also constructed of seam folded Zinc cladding.

Within the limitations of the original house, this building has been transformed beyond recognition and to an extremely high level of detail and finish, a compliment to the builder and client’s tenacity.
